Russell P. Rosenberg, PhD, DABSM, a leader in sleep medicine with over 30 years of experience in clinical sleep medicine and research, passed away on Nov 10 in Dunwoody, Ga, at age 67.
Rosenberg founded The Atlanta School of Sleep Medicine in 1992 and had served as its CEO. He was the chief science officer and CEO of Atlanta-based NeuroTrials Research Inc, a company he began with in 1995. His research interests included sleep disorders and wearable and medical devices, according to his NeuroTrials Research profile.
A board-certified sleep specialist, Rosenberg was a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a past chairman of the National Sleep Foundation (NSF).
“Our hearts are heavy at National Sleep Foundation after hearing our friend and colleague Russell Rosenberg, PhD, has passed. We share thoughts of peace and healing with his family and are balancing this sad news with good memories of our time with him,” says National Sleep Foundation chair Temitayo Oyegbile-Chidi, MD, PhD. “Dr Rosenberg was an insightful research colleague and educator, a former chair (2011-2013) and invested member of NSF’s board of directors, and an enduring supporter of NSF’s work to serve the public as a leader in sleep health and safety.”
Rosenberg obtained his doctorate in clinical psychology from Ohio State University and underwent his residency in sleep medicine at Rush Presbyterian St Luke’s Medical Center.
He gave presentations around the United States and internationally on sleep disorders and authored several book chapters and journal articles in the field, according to his Pri-Med profile. Earlier this year, he participated in a Sleep Review podcast on how to treat insomnia in primary care.
“Russ was a devoted friend, boss, husband, father, and grandfather. He was an internationally recognized leader in sleep medicine and award-winning hobby photographer,” his obituary reads. “He is already profoundly missed by those left to carry his memory: his wife, Gailen Rosenberg, his children, Elizabeth and Kevin Rowland, Zoe and Andrew Bayley, as well as his four grandchildren.”
A graveside service was held for Rosenberg on Nov 13 at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, Ga.
