“While we are carefully designing what the three astronauts will have during their space trip, we have already started working on their diet requirements as they prepare for the mission. There will also be special care when they return to earth,” NIN director, Dr Hemalatha R, said.
Scientists K Venkatesh and E R Nandeep and nutritionist G Vennela have been designing the diet requirements of the astronauts. NIN will assess the energy during the training period, flight and post-flight, for the astronauts. It will also analyse health and nutrition, daily activity and biochemical and physiological parameters of the astronauts and develop a diet plan based on their assessment.
According to the scientists, the preferred taste and food, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, of the astronauts have been taken into consideration.
It will be possible for the astronauts to consume fresh vegetables on the first day of their space travel, they will necessarily have to have packaged food during the rest of the days, with the option of biryani being available too.
