The bodies were identified as that of Gopi, 60, his wife Sheela, 55, and their son Shibin, 36.
Police said the deaths were prima facie suicides because of financial hardships and that they have recovered a suicide note. Shibin’s wife and two children were at his wife’s paternal house.
As per the FIR registered by the Chengamanad police, the deaths happened sometime between 8pm on Wednesday and 4.30am on Thursday.
“The three of them were found dead, hanging in the living room of their house. Primary investigation points towards suicide and there is no foul play involved,” said a police officer.
“Shibin’s wife and children were at her home, and they could not get through to him over the phone. She told a relative to check on the family and that is when they were found dead,” he said.
Gopi was an autorickshaw driver. Police said Shibi had reportedly taken money from various people for arranging jobs for them abroad. However, the promised jobs did not materialize, and he was unable to return the money.
A case of unnatural death has been registered by the police and a probe has been launched. The bodies were handed over to the kin after an autopsy on Thursday.
