In the match between South Africa and England in the ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Reece Topley suffered an injury to the index finger of his bowling hand while trying to stop a drive off his own bowling.
England coach Matthew Mott has said that it is likely to be a fracture that will rule him out of the World Cup, as England lost the match by 229 runs—their biggest loss in the format. England’s chances of finishing in the top four look bleak with three losses in four matches.
South African captain Temba Bavuma also missed the game against the defending champions due to illness. However, there’s no confirmation whether he will be available for the game against Bangladesh on Tuesday, October 24.

The Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan suffered an injury in his left quad in the match against New Zealand and had to sit out in the match as his deputy Najmul Hossain Shanto took over captaincy. Shakib is expected to return to the eleven in the game against South Africa on Tuesday, October 24.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson was ruled out of the team due to a thumb fracture in the game against Bangladesh on Friday, October 13. Williamson will miss out on a few matches before returning to the playing eleven. He made his comeback to competitive cricket in the game against Bangladesh after recovering from a knee injury that he sustained during the IPL 2023.
New Zealand veteran bowler Tim Southee sustained a fracture to his right thumb in the ODI series against England and has missed the first four matches that New Zealand has played. However, even without Southee’s service, the Kiwi bowlers have displayed great camaraderie by picking wickets at crucial junctures in all four matches.
Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka suffered a right thigh muscle injury in the game against Pakistan on Tuesday, October 10 and has been ruled out of the team for the tournament as he will require at least three weeks to recover. Sri Lanka announced the traveling reserve Chamika Karunaratne as Shanaka’s replacement for the remaining matches of the tournament.
South Africa’s regular captain Temba Bavuma did not play his team’s match against defending champions England in Mumbai on Saturday. In Bavuma absence, Aiden Markram, South Africa’s T20 skipper, captained the side.
Bavuma missed the match as he was fell ill. There is no timeline yet if Bavuma will be back for the team’s next match against Bangladesh on October 24.
