Hyderabad: A faster onset of osteoporosis is being seen among people post pandemic due to staying indoors for long hours as well as random usage of steroids, according to doctors. While Indians are in general prone to osteoporosis at a younger age, starting as early as 40 years, doctors said that they were seeing more and more cases of fractures and reduction in bone density (slow progress to osteoporosis), resulting in decreased quality of life. At the state-run Gandhi Hospital, for instance, every sixth patient coming to the orthopaedic department has some level of bone density reduction, doctors said. The numbers are similar in private hospitals too. In case of youngsters complaining of joint aches, the primary reason was their inactive lifestyle, doctors said. In osteoporosis, the bone mass is lost gradually with usually no signs or symptoms, resulting in bones becoming so fragile that there can be sudden fracture even in the case of minor falls. Some times without any strain it can cause a fracture. “Susceptibility to fracture is mainly seen in bones of hip, spine and wrist, all of these cause functional limitations, reduced quality of life, loss of independence and inability to do personal work. Sometimes these fractures remain undetected, adding to the risk of infections and mortality too. Indiscriminate usage of steroids is a big contributor apart from smoking, certain drugs and lack of exercise,” said Dr Balavardhan Reddy, orthopaedic specialist, adding that every fifth patient above 35 years turning up at the clinic was found to have reduced bone density.

Men too vulnerable to breast cancer: Doctors

Three cases of male breast cancer were detected at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) between 2020 and 2022, while 117 women were diagnosed with breast cancer during the same period. Male breast cancer cases are typically detected at advanced ages from 50 years onward, while females are diagnosed mostly in the age group of 30-40 years. The State Cancer Institute has detected 11 cases of male breast cancer since September last year, compared to 578 cases in women. While male breast cancer cases in Bihar are low, other types of cancer such as oral, lung, and blood cancers are common among men in the state. It is important to lead an active lifestyle and maintain weight to prevent male breast cancer.
