A series of distressing reports of suicides by students has surfaced one after the other in a very short span of time. These rising incidents have dragged the concern of the entire nation for the students, who are studying in Kota. With steep escalation in such incidents, the state government and educational institutions are being put in the dock for failing to control increasing suicide cases. Reportedly, the number of students suicide cases in Kota has been recorded highest this year.
The condition in Kota has sparked a debate on the situation of the students in Rajasthan’s Kota. Following a series of such distressing reports, a team of Republic went to observe the state of students and how they tackle the immense pressure of performing well. Meanwhile, the team of Republic came across a temple in the city, which is enough to speak volumes about the kind of mental stress and pressure the students in Kota go through.
Rajasthan govt has expressed concern over rising suicide cases
The temple, which is situated in the heart of the city, has all the written records about the students, who come to pray to the God, when no one else listens to them.
While analysing the temple, it was found in the ‘Parikrama’ area of the temple that the students have written numerous prayers addressing the God. Some students have written prayers to the God for their family, some have shown their care for their parents while some have prayed for the happiness of their parents.
One of the written prayers read, “Please God give me strength to control my anger.” Another prayer read, “Please God take care of my Dada and Amma”.
The locals state that several students come to the temple to pray to God and it is a part of their tradition to write their prayer on the wall of the temple. It is believed that if they write their prayer on the wall, it will get fulfilled.
Meanwhile, the Rajasthan government has shown its concern on the rising number of students suicide cases in Kota. The government has asked the institutions in the city to follow some certain guidelines, so as to ensure that the students get less stressed. They have also been advised to adapt a more relaxed teaching schedule, allowing fun-filled activities to the students along with stress relieving sessions.
Kota is notably known to be the city of premier coaching institutions and a number of students flock every year to the city to prepare for competitive exams. However, the stiff competition among the students to crack the success reportedly results in immense pressure, leading to a toll on their mental health.
It was on a Sunday, when back to back two students, preparing for competitive exams in the city’s institution, chose to end their life by committing suicide in a span of over four hours.
