With compelling performances and breakthrough roles in Mirzapur, Victoria & Abdul, and Fukrey, Ali Fazal has showcased his exceptional versatility as an actor. It’s clear he takes his craft very seriously, diving headfirst into his character’s skin before playing him on screen. In fact, he trains hard to look the part for every new project with his fitness trainer, Rohit Nair, who is a Multifaceted Celebrity Coach and Athlete. Nair specialises in combat training, which has unique physical benefits like improved cardiovascular endurance, strength and power, flexibility and range of motion, agility and coordination, core strength, mental health, and fat loss and weight management. Apart from combat training, he also focuses on strength, functional, and mobility training with Fazal. We caught up with Nair to find out more about the actor’s workout routine and how his approach to fitness has changed over the years.
GQ: How long have you been working with Ali Fazal? What are some key differences you have observed in his fitness since then?
Rohit Nair: I have been working with Ali for over 5 years now. We started off with improving in combat training along with losing fat. I would say that he is much fitter overall now and I don’t just mean aesthetically. We made sure to work on performing better in our workouts and good aesthetics came as a by-product.
GQ: Can you explain the main focus points of the fitness routine you have built for him?
RN: We try to cover all the aspects of fitness and athleticism. We focus a lot on strength and conditioning to maintain a good physique and health. Two days of the week are dedicated to compound movements and bodybuilding, and one day for improving the mobility of the entire body. Ali is also extremely passionate about combat sports, so his training includes a lot of jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, and MMA. That’s what we do at least two times a week, i.e. working on developing a combat skill set and challenging our cardio.
